Symptoms and Obligations

Sometimes I feel like life is a string of dental appointments.
The check-ups.
The biannual cleaning.
The cavities.
And that one time I got my wisdom teeth out.

The novocaine doesn't numb anything.
The anesthesia doesn't change the fact you're at the dentist.

To Be Yourself

One thing I'm proud of is always being myself in every situation. I will never give up or change who I am under any circumstance. I had a job interview today and before I was going, people were telling me to "be bubbly and outgoing," "dress nice," "kiss up" and to "put cover up on my insanely sunburnt nose."

I replied, "I will be myself. I will not hide any part of me. And if they don't like it, that's okay. At least I didn't give up who I am just to get somewhere in life." (I ended up getting the job, by the way.)

I've lived by that philosophy literally my entire life. I've lost things from it. But I've also gained a lot from it. I am happiest while being myself and I do not care how the world reacts to it. I am infinitely unique...and I wouldn't trade that for the world.

Today is my Birthday!

I am officially 18 years old! (but I still feel like a 5 year old.) Yesterday I celebrated my birthday with my sweetheart and we had an awesome time! Just thinking about it makes my heart flutter. (we are so fairytale it's sick, isn't it?) He planned out the whole day and never told me where he was taking me, but I always had a feeling about what it would be, and ended up being right.

We had a silly dinner at a place called Noodlecat, then went to a super-cute cupcake shop called Colossal Cupcakes. At the cupcake shop we bought an overpriced cake pop and laughed at an annoying indian guy that wouldn't move from the place we wanted to sit. After a while we went to Barnes and Noble, which was awesome because book stores make us very happy. It was amazing just sitting there reading magazine articles, making fun of cheesy book covers and dancing around the aisles. But I have to say my favorite part was when he took me to fun n stuff. (It's basically an arcade/roller skating place/laser tag/party zone. What? I don't know. We have a lot of childhood memories together and the place hasn't changed a bit. It was quite nostalgic but also super fun! We spent all of our money (or should I say his money) on dumb games and we ended up winning a toy owl and a bouncy ball. Woo! After all of those shenanigans  we went to the gas station to pick up two bags of our favorite snack: hot fries, to eat while we watch SNL. It was actually a pretty average day for us. But I couldn't of asked for a better birthday, or a better boyfriend. Oh - and look at this cute gift he gave me: a jar full of our movie tickets!

One thing that excites me about my birthday is all the countless mail and email I get from companies just simply wishing me a happy birthday. One thing that excites me even more is when the company is like, "Hey, have a free coffee on us. Hey, how about a BOGO deal for ya?" I mean, no one loves free stuff more than me. So I thought I would make this post dedicated to Sephora Beauty Insider's yearly birthday gift!

Like I said in a previous post, I am not your girl when it comes to cosmetics. I barely wear any and I never buy any. Sephora is actually quite overpriced. Even if you've never shopped at Sephora in your life, why not sign up for their beauty insider program? You don't have to actually buy anything...just on your birthday every year you come into the store and pick up a birthday gift! It's pretty exciting...at least for me.

This year, they gave out a mini lipstick and mascara from Make Up For Ever. The lipstick is a beautiful neutral shade, that isn't too flashy but gives your lips some extra color. And the mascara works really well too!

There are many places that offer you deals and freebies not only on your birthday, but all year round for no cost. And I say, why not? I go to panera too much NOT to have a rewards card. I go to speedway a lot, so why not get a rewards card? If it's free, why not?

Green Tea Face Mask: DIY!

When it comes to cosmetics, I'm really not your girl. I usually never actually go out of my way to buy products. To be quite honest...because I'm female and not many people really know what to get me for my birthday and Christmas, they assume I like beauty products. So I use what I get as gifts for the most part. But there is one thing I do like...I love experimenting and making my own beauty products. I've made a few face masks and they work a lot better than any store bought face mask. This one is by far my favorite.

I really just threw a bunch of things together that I knew benefited all skin types. Then I realized, "Oh, this is kind of a green tea face mask." Heres what you'll need:

3 tbsp greek yogurt
2 tbsp brewed green tea
one teabag of green tea opened
one lemon slice
one tbsp honey

Here's what you do:

1. Brew one cup of green tea however you'd like. Set aside.
2. Take one green tea bag, cut open, and put the tea leaves in a small bowl. Add greek yogurt, brewed green tea, and honey. Then squeeze one lemon slice. Mix up.

You have your green tea mask! You'll have a small amount leftover, but that's okay. This peels off dead skin you didn't even know you had and leaves your skin extra soft. The lemon adds a healthy glow and the green tea adds plenty of antioxidants to your skin. Because all of the ingredients are fresh, there's nothing that can possibly go wrong.

Babbling about Harry Potter

It's simply amazing to me that there are hundreds of thousands of people out there going on with their lives. But deep down, we all share something that the majority of people don't understand: a love for Harry Potter...

all those years of book releases, midnight parties, worldwide conventions, tumbling our asses off, meeting friends, creating art and music, and it becoming a HUGE part of our lives.

It became a lifestyle. It saved lives. It still remains much more than just a story.

This comes across my mind a lot of the time. Reason being it will always be apart of me. Every time I see ABC Harry Potter weekend on, I watch it. Every time a wizard rock song comes on my ipod, I listen to it.

And I'll always go to the conventions. I'll read the books over again. And I'm not letting Harry Potter stop me from living my future...but I'll never let go of something that is simply apart of who I am.

I used to think it was the end of an era...but who am I kidding? This will never end. It really can't end. We all used to be so depressed that no more books or movies were coming out. Things might be a bit different...but Harry Potter will never be replaced. I'm happy knowing nothings really changed at all.

(am I back to random blogposts about feelings again?)

J'adore These Purses!

The other day I came across Melie Biancos Spring 2014 handbag collection. And I was literally freaking out. I mean, really, I'm not a big purse person. I use the same purse for everything until it breaks.

Although these purses are styled for spring, they can be used all year round. At least in my case. Pastels are kind of my life.

Regardless, I think Melie Bianco is so underrated! You can purchase purses straight from her website for their original retail price (usually 70 to 160 dollars) But you can also find her purses at a bunch of other places for WAY cheaper! (low as 25 dollars)

These two are my favorite bags by her I've seen so far. I can see myself using it for dates to the park...shopping...holding library books...endless possibilities. *swoons*

I've been cooking a lot lately...

It's true. I've been constantly trying new recipes and having a great time with it! I've always loved grocery shopping with all of my heart and now that I get to do it even more makes my little heart jump with joy. I know I haven't been blogging a lot lately, but heres some things I've been making lately.

To the right are some pictures of things I've been making lately. In order from left to right: summer salad, ranch mozzarella balls, vegan sloppy joes and s'mores bars.

Here are the recipes! :)

Summer Salad with a delicious Cilantro Vinaigrette

Everyone in my family devoured this. It's the perfect side or even entree for lunch, dinner, and everything in between. There isn't anything to strong about the taste and it's a healthy alternative to pasta salad! Can easily be made vegan without cheese.

1 can of corn
2 avocados, diced
1/2 red onion, diced
1 can chickpeas
2/3 cup feta cheese
1 red pepper, diced
1/2 english cucumber

Cilantro Vinaigrette for the salad:
1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 tbsp white or red wine vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 tbsp chopped cilantro
6 tbsp olive oil

All you really need to do is chop everything up and put it into a bowl. For the vinaigrette, you just mix it all up in a separate bowl then add it to the salad. I would give you step by step directions, but I don't think thats necessary. :) Next up!

Ranch Mozzarella Balls

Let me warn you...these do not last long. They taste like resturant mozzarella sticks only 1) they have a twang to them and 2) they are sphere shaped. Therefore they are even better! It's messy to make but so worth it!

1 block of fresh mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 packet hidden valley ranch seasoning mix
2 eggs
a lot of panko bread crumbs! (I used spicy ones)
oil for frying

1. Get three bowls. In the first one, mix flour and ranch seasoning mix. In the second bowl, whisk the eggs together. In the third bowl, add 1 1/2 cup of panko bread crumbs to begin with.
2. Cut up mozzarella into small square/rectangular shapes.
3. Roll each piece in the flour mix, the eggs, then the bread crumbs. Repeat again for each piece.
4. Add as many pieces as you can fit onto a frying pan, use tongs to flip them. Fry until brown.

Vegan Sloppy Joes

This recipe is way easier than you expect. And you can really be creative with it, but it starts out simple! If you're a huge sloppy joe fan like me, but you don't want to eat meat...try this recipe!

2 bags of MorningStar Farms crumbles
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 green pepper, finely chopped
1 1/2 cans of manwich sauce
salt and pepper to taste
oil for frying
buns for serving

1. Add a little bit of oil to pan. Add onions and peppers, cook for 4-6 minutes.
2. Add the crumbles and sauce at the same time. Add any other spices you would like, cover and cook until boiling.
3. Serve on buns. Isn't that simple?

S'mores Bars

Graduation party? Bonfire? Family cookout? Whatever the occasion  these are so creative! It has such a decadent, homemade taste but the Hershey's on top gives it something special.

For the crust:
1/2 cup butter melted
1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs

For the dough:
2 cups brown sugar
2/3 cup salted butter (softened)
2 eggs
2 1/2 cup flour
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup mini marshmallows

For the top before baking:
1 Milk Chocolate Candy Bar (broken into pieces)
1 Graham Cracker (broken into pieces)
1/2 cup marshmallows

1. Preheat the oven to 325.
2. Line a 13x9 glass pan with foil. Combine melted butter and graham cracker crumbs in bowl (I just smashed up graham crackers instead of buying crumbs) and then pour it into the pan. Press down the crust.
3. Now when it comes to the dough, mix the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, baking powder, salt and flour together. It doesn't matter in what order. Then add in chocolate chips and mini marshmallows!
4. Put dough in the pan and press it down. Add the hersheys pieces, graham cracker pieces and marshmallows on top and then cook for 30 minutes.
